Day 46: Sulforaphane – one of the most potent anti-cancer compounds ever discovered (TYOH, July 2021)

Sulforaphane was discovered by scientists at Johns Hopkins in 1992. Since then, over 2,400 studies have been published on it in the peer-reviewed literature.

Scientists have identified 39 distinct pro-health mechanisms for sulforaphane so far. Many health professionals and researchers believe that sulforaphane is one of the most potent nutritional compounds known today.

  • It’s one of the most potent anti-cancer compounds ever discovered.
  • It dramatically improves the body’s ability to eliminate toxins like glyphosate, heavy metals, BPA, etc.
  • It protects the brain and improves cognitive function.
  • It powerfully reduces inflammation.
  • It slows the aging process by reducing oxidative stress.
  • It has antiviral properties and may protect against COVID-19.

The best video I have watched to learn all about sulforaphane is this one by Rhonda Patrick from Found My Fitness:

Where do you get sulforaphane from?

There are only two reliable sources of therapeutic levels of sulforaphane:

  • Broccoli sprouts
  • Supplements

However, there are problems with both.

Most broccoli seeds for sprouting that you can buy online or at a local store contain unknown amounts of the precursor compound that produces sulforaphane. So, you could go through all of the work involved in sprouting the broccoli seeds – which is considerable – and still not end up with any sulforaphane.

In the case of supplements, most products on the market are a waste of money. Why? Because they don’t contain true sulforaphane. They contain a precursor to sulforaphane.

In theory, this precursor can be converted into true sulforaphane. But in reality, that rarely happens.

However, there is one supplement that is produced in France called Prostaphane. For 15 years, Triballat Noyal, a family-owned company in the northwest corner of France, worked relentlessly to find a way to extract sulforaphane from broccoli seeds and deliver a potent and stable form of the compound.

While other laboratories around the world chose an easier path – to deliver the sulforaphane precursor glucoraphanin (AKA sulforaphane glucosinolate) – the Nutrinov lab at Triballat wouldn’t settle for a precursor.

In the end, they succeeded in creating the world’s only high potency natural stabilized sulforaphane supplement.

You can buy it in the UK from Sanareva.

One capsule contains 10 mg of free and stabilised sulforaphane.

Have you tried a sulforaphane supplement before? Let me know in the comments below.
