Day 61 (31st July) Reflections on July – The Year of Health

It’s the end of July and the end of my month focusing on optimising my gut health.

Throughout July I’ve written about several strategies you can implement to improve the health of your microbiome.

Here’s a list of some of the strategies you could try.

  1. Bone Broth – making broth from the bones of chicken or beef produces a gut-healing superfood. You can drink a mug daily or add it to cooking – it’s the perfect base for soups and stews.
  2. Probiotic Foods – I love kefir for it’s amazing probiotic benefits, it contains a large number of unique bacteria and yeast strains.
  3. Probiotic Supplements – I wrote about the three main classes of probiotics (Lactobacillus / bifidobacteria blends, Saccharomyces boulardii and spore-forming probiotics) and some of my favourite probiotic brands including the new breed of hyper-biotics such as Elixa Probiotic.
  4. Prebiotics – these are the fibres that feed the probiotic bacteria in your gut. Eating a wide diversity of fruits and vegetables ensures you get lots of prebiotic fibres in your diet. You can also add prebiotic fibre to smoothies and yogurt, I use a prebiotic called Bimuno which I add to tea, coffee or my daily Gut Health Smoothie.
  5. Helminthic Therapy – controversial perhaps but absolutely fascinating – this is the practice of using helminths (a.k.a worms) to restore the microbiome and reset the immune system.

July Recipes

During this month I posted the following recipes:

I also created a FREE recipe book with seasonal recipes for July which you can download here.

July Foraging

This month I foraged for Stinging Nettles Seeds, Common Hogweed Florets (unopened flower buds), Ground Elder, Dandelion, Plantain, Mallow and Smooth Sow Thistle.

Foraging for wild plants increases the nutrient-density and the diversity of my diet, both of which are good for gut health and overall health.

I’m looking forward to some new challenges in August!

Until tomorrow,
